Hair is one of those factors which add to an individual’s personality and it completely defines the way a person looks. Depending on the type of haircut you get, you can look like a totally new person, and that is why people are so fussy about having the right kind of haircut. Acquiring a perfect haircut also means that you would need the perfect pair of hair scissors.
Just like pencils and knives, in order to derive optimum performance from hair shears you will have to sharpen them from time to time. Sharpening hair scissors is very important and in fact it is just as important as selecting the right kind of hair shears to do the job. To be completely honest, sharpening your own hair scissors at home isn’t easy. It is more like a combination of a scientific process and art for which expertise is an essential requisite. You need to take a lot of precautions so as not to ruin the scissors. The biggest blunder one can make when sharpening these at home is to use tinfoil or sandpaper for the purpose as these are just not right for the task.
Since you cannot go on a buying spree every single time your scissors become a bit blunt, there is an easy technique on how to sharpen your hair shears yourself at home in order to get that perfect cut. All you need is a whetstone and when you do purchase one you must ensure that it is of high quality.
Some people prefer to open the hair scissors by unscrewing the hinge and sharpening the blades individually, but it is possible to sharpen the blades without unscrewing the scissor as well. For this you simply need to open the scissor until it is wide enough for sharpening the entire length of the blade. Lay the exterior part entirely flat on its back and then angle the blade diagonally. Now, put enough amount of pressure on the blades while being gentle at the same time and strike the blades of the scissors on the whetstone. Remember to lift up the blades after every stroke.
You will know when to stop because the cutting edge of the exterior part of the scissors or the bevel blade will be even. Now take a soft cloth and gently wipe the blades until it is clean. Then it is time to proceed with the other blade. After you have sharpened the scissors, try to open and close it repeatedly. If you find it hard to do so then you can adjust the pivot screw by loosening it or tightening it.
Remember to apply some oil on the hair scissors while sharpening it and also to use the rough side of the whetstone and not the aluminum oxide side because that would be highly ineffective.
